Shortly after my 1988 Washington City Paper piece on hitchhiking was published, I got a call from a producer for a show called “CBS Nightwatch,” telling me they’d seen the piece, had decided to do a segment on hitchhiking, and wanted me to be one of the guests. The host was a guy named Charlie Rose who I’d never heard of, because his show aired (literally) at 4am. Here’s the full 15 minute segment, recorded by a friend who knew how to program a VCR:
